Benefits of sedation dentistry

Imagine going into the dentist’s office for a complex procedure such as periodontal treatment and leaving with little to no recollection of the time that has passed or any other anxiety triggers. If this sounds like a dream, it’s not. Oral conscious sedation allows patients to experienced comfortable, anxiety-free dental care to improve their oral health. Sedation dentistry is completely safe and has many benefits for patients who are overcome with fear or anxiety of the dentist. At Levenson Smile in Worcester, we may recommend sedation dentistry for patients who have negative feelings about the dentist in order to turn the experience into a positive one. Some of the people who may benefit from sedation include those with:

  • Anxiety of sitting in the dentist’s chair

  • Inability or discomfort sitting still for extended periods of time

  • Difficulty getting numb with local anesthetic

Sedation dentistry allows us to use various methods of relaxation (some medicated and some non-medicated) to treat patients who experience anxiety at the dentist’s office. One of the most common methods we use in our Worcester office is oral conscious sedation.

Oral sedation involves prescribing a safe anti-anxiety medication that is to be taken prior to coming into the office for the procedure. The medication produces feelings of peace, serenity, and relaxation during your treatment.

During your initial appointment, the dentist will discuss your anxiety with you and then, explain the medicine you’ll be taking. You’ll need to arrange transportation to and from the office for your treatment. On the day of your appointment, you’ll take your medication as instructed and just relax while you wait for the medication to begin taking effect. After your appointment, you will have little to no memory of the visit and will leave the office with a healthier smile and none of your typical feelings of anxiety.

It takes several hours for the medication wear off, which is why it’s important to have someone there to drive you home after your appointment. Plan to rest for the remainder of the day and by the next day, you will feel back to normal.

While one of the primary uses for oral sedation is helping patients with dental anxiety, it isn’t the only one. Here are some other important benefits of oral sedation.

While this may sound like a scary disease, all it means is that you will not remember the procedure. This is important because many patients have dental phobia as a result of an unpleasant experience. The sedation dentistry blocks the mind from creating a new memory of the experience, this benefit often helps reduce fear in the future. In fact, many patients with a powerful history of dental anxiety go on to receive dental care without sedation.

While our gag reflex is important to keep us from choking, it can get in the way of dental work. When patients have a strong gag reflex, it can hinder the dentist from going deep inside the oral cavity, which is necessary during certain procedure. Sedation paralyzes this reflex, making the patient more comfortable and allowing the dentist to work faster.

Sedation is also effective for patients who do not get or remain completely numb with local anesthesia, and those who wish to have multiple procedures completed in a single day. When patients are numb, dentists can work much faster and more efficiently.

If you are curious if oral sedation will benefit you, feel free to let us know and we can provide you with more information on the treatment.

So, if you have been actively avoiding receiving much needed dental care because you are nervous or anxious about being in the dentist’s chair, you could benefit from sedation dentistry.
