NuCalm Treatment – Sedation Dentistry

We understand that people don’t often talk about how much they love going to the dentist. In fact, many patients are so nervous or anxious about going that they miss appointments altogether. Fortunately, NuCalm can help get patients relaxed so they really can look forward to their dental treatments.

What is Different about NuCalm?

Typically, dentists that are using sedation dentistry offer a few options to their patients. Unfortunately, these are all medications, and some patients either can’t tolerate those medications, or they just don’t want to. NuCalm offers a drug-free alternative to those treatments to help our patients feel relaxed and at ease throughout their appointment.

What is NuCalm?

NuCalm utilizes four different techniques to help relax patients. These techniques all focus on harnessing the natural relaxation systems within your body so that you can feel completely at ease.

  • Topical Cream or Supplement – The first step is to use a topical cream that contains gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). GABA is a naturally produced chemical that your body creates to feel relaxed. When GABA is present, it helps the brain shut down activities and prepares you to sleep. Generally, when people are stressed, the brain actually stops accepting GABA to keep you alert and aware. This brings us to the next technique.

  • Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation (CES) – This special device helps to open the brain’s receptors so that they can accept the GABA and allow you to relax. This therapy also triggers your body to begin producing serotonin. Serotonin is a critical chemical that allows you to relax completely and helps regulate sleep.

  • Headphones – In order to help you focus on relaxing, headphones are used with specific rhythms and tones to allow you to relax. Different signals in each ear help to change your brainwaves from the frantic stressed pace to something much closer to your sleep patterns.

  • Light Blocking Glasses – Finally, special glasses that help to block the light can allow you a deeper sense of relaxation. The bright lights of the dentist’s office can often trigger you to be more alert, so by wearing the glasses; you can help your body be as relaxed as possible.

Reducing Side Effects

Typically, medicinal aids that help you relax have a variety of side effects or contraindications for patients. Some patients may not be able to take them because they have an allergy, or because they have had a bad experience in the past.

NuCalm’s approach to using four different techniques allows for each part of the process to play a role. If a single medication is going to have a calming effect, it must be very potent to overcome each of the triggers to stress and anxiety. These potent chemicals can often remain in our bloodstream for some time after the procedure. In the case of oral or IV relaxation techniques, many patients cannot drive home following their appointment. This can create another level of stress for many of our patients.

What if it Isn’t Enough?

One of the biggest concerns that patients have about using NuCalm is that it won’t offer enough relief. We understand that you want to have all of the available tools at your disposal, and NuCalm doesn’t prevent you from using another form of sedation too. This means that you can start using NuCalm, and if you decide that you are still too anxious, your dentist can quickly add the appropriate level of medicinal sedation during your appointment.
